Don McCauley was the first of Carolina’s backs to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. He shattered the Carolina and the Atlantic Coast Conference record books with a dazzling senior season in 1970. He rushed for 1,720 yards and scored 21 touchdowns, setting marks that still stand at UNC. His 1,720 yards was an all-time collegiate high at the time, breaking O.J. Simpson’s NCAA record. McCauley led the nation in all-purpose running that season. He was twice the ACC Player of the Year and still ranks fifth in career rushing at UNC. After UNC, McCauley played 11 years with the Baltimore Colts. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2002. McCauley currenty works as the director of major gifts for the Rams Club.
The New York Athletic Club is an ideal setting to honor Don McCauley, a local graduate of Garden City High School in Long Island. Founded in 1868, the NYAC boasts a unique history. The Club’s founding premise was to bring structure to a sporting environment that was lacking in organization and uniformity of measurement. Over the years the NYAC organized the first US championships in boxing, wrestling and outdoor track and field. Today, the NYAC ranks among the elite amateur sporting clubs with an unmatched athletic history and on-going commitment to the pursuit of sporting excellence. |
