Carolina celebrates a strong tradition of service to the community, and the philanthropy projects of the NYCC seek to extend this tradition to our New York community through three main eleemosynary endeavors.

Richard H. Jenrette/ New York Carolina Club Scholarship Fund

Proceeds from each year’s Fall Cocktail and select other events go towards a special scholarship fund, administered by the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid, which provides financial assistance to students from the New York metro area to attend UNC-Chapel Hill.  For a complete list of 2008-09 Carolina Club Scholarship recipients, click here.

Carolina in the Classroom

There are many recent Carolina graduates teaching in New York City, particularly through programs for recent graduates such as Teach for America. Each year, Carolina has one of the highest numbers of students entering the Teach for America program nationwide. TFA places recent graduates in low-income and often struggling schools, confronting new teachers with tremendous challenges as they work to close the achievement gap.

Carolina in the Classroom enables Carolina graduates who have been established in the city for a longer period of time to enrich teachers’ classroom service by donating their time, skills, or resources to new teachers. There are ways for all alumni to get involved by funding mini-grants for classroom materials, volunteering as a tutor, or guest speaking. New York Cares Day

The Tar Heels started a tradition in 2009 by participating in New York Cares Day, painting and refurbishing classrooms at a Brooklyn school.  In addition, the New York Tar Heels raised over $4,000, placing the UNC General Alumni Association’s team in the top 5 among over 500 teams!  Visit our team page or contact Alston Mann ‘05 if interested in getting involved.
